This is a very significant photo of two Belgian refugee families, the Klutz and Cornelius, who were looked after in Westhoughton at an old Fourgates School in 1914 when they had to leave Belgium hurriedly because of the German invasion of that country.

Mary Leigh in photo, she lived at 377 Chorley Rd., her brother John Leigh at 377.
The Hut was on some land near the Fourgates Hotel car park and was on a 21 year lease by J. Bancroft from 12th November 1952 at £5 annual rent.
377 & 379 Chorley Rd., was leased for 999 years from 8th Nov 1933 – a transfer of the ownership of 377 in June 1944 to Mr James Victor & Mrs Hannah Worthington, and 379 to Mr Samuel, and Mrs Ellen Seddon.
