The Bolton and Leigh Railway opened in 1828. The original route crossed Manchester Road, A6, at Chequerbent as a level crossing. The crossing keeper lived in a cottage beside the track, which survives to this day as a residence, named “Hope Cottage”.

The building is proudly marked by a blue plaque, placed there by Westhoughton Local History Group.
